Introduction

In this portion of My World, I will be critiquing my own work as if I was an outsider observing my own piece.

I will be separating each piece into three aspects:

  1. Quality of idea - storytelling

  2. Craftsmanship

  3. If I were to redo this piece, what would I do differently?

Why?

Critiquing your own art and work is important because it helps you see where you can improve and get better. By looking at your own work closely, you can grow and keep learning. Architecture has taught me that it's okay to start over, and that by regularly reviewing and reflecting on my past work, I can prevent unnecessary rework and find ways to improve before moving forward.

I refer to this piece as

Head in the clouds - 2022

This piece is an acrylic 8 x 10 painting. With this piece I felt as it was always straightforward, a confused being searching for an answer but lost within their own mind. But, as I spent hours and hours painting the cloud, I realized that I don’t want this to piece to be straightforward. I want it to tell a story. Which I believe it lacks.

This is one of my all-time fan favorites. My family, friends, and clients say this is one of the best paintings I’ve done. Although the size and background lacked in difficulty. I found the colors white and gray, provided the hardest shade range I had yet to face. For the actual difficulty of this painting, I found it to have high craftsmanship for my skill set at the time.

If I were to redo this piece, I would first prime my canvas. The white spots in the background are the first thing that I see. Priming would’ve also blended out my shading better and made them look less splotchy. Additionally, I would have spent more time on the body rather than hours on the cloud. Yes, the cloud is pinnacle to the piece, but I believe it to be obvious where my attention was catered to. Overall, an amazing piece and for being one of my first paintings ever, super successful.
